Via Sacra cycling pilgrimage route - from Cunewalde to Kamenz
First mentioned in 1222, the village of Cunewalde is one of the largest in Upper Lusatia. Its scenic location in the broad ice age valley basin between the mountain ranges of Czorneboh (Sorbian: Black God) and Bieleboh (White God) makes it especially attractive. It belongs to the Via Sacra due to its Protestant village church with 2,632 seats, the largest of its kind in Germany. The bronze memorial for the victims of World War I was created by the German-Jewish sculptor Benno Elkan, who is also known for the large Menorah in front of the Knesset in Jerusalem. The cemetery contains the vault of the writer Wilhelm von Polenz ("The Cooper Farmer"), who had close ties with Gerhart Hauptmann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Leo Tolstoy, Erich Mühsam, and Theodor Fontane.
Excursions from Cunewalde to Bieleboh and Czorneboh, both offering mountain inns and observation towers, are worthwhile.
