St. Marienthal Convent

It really had a turbulent past: The trials of time notwithstanding St. Marienthal Convent has been in existence since 1234. The date is not only easy to remember but also makes it the oldest convent of the Cistercian order in Germany. It is some years older than the convent St. Marienstern near Bautzen. In upper Lusatia, a very tolerant region when it comes to faith, different religions have coexisted peacefully until this day. After the German Reunification, the sisters seized the chance to set up an international meeting centre in the empty farm buildings that offer overnight accommodations. The idyllic convent grounds near the Neisse River offer numerous attractions for spontaneous guests. Among them the convent church, the convent shop, convent bakery and of course the convent tavern where you can enjoy Upper Lusatian dishes and traditional convent dishes as well as the Marienthal convent beer.
